How long is a therapy session?
Sessions are typically 50 minutes in duration. This is called the ‘therapeutic hour’.
What happens during the first session of therapy?
The first session is an introduction between you and the therapist. This is a chance for both parties to familiarize themselves and assess if there's a good connection.
You will discuss the reasons for seeking therapy and outline your goals, expressing what you hope to achieve through the process.
The therapist will inquire about the reasons behind your decision to seek therapy. They may explore the specific needs or issues you wish to address during your treatment and inquire about your previous steps to manage your mental health. Discussing what strategies have been effective and what have not will provide them with insights to tailor the best assistance for your needs.
If you both agree to move forward with therapy together, your therapist will discuss ‘contracting’.
What is contracting? Why does it matter?
Contracting is just an initial agreement between you and your therapist. It is used to set out the rights and responsibilities of both parties. It can be verbally agreed upon or be a signed document which can be revisited at any time during therapy by either party.
Contracting ensures that clients know what to expect from therapy. It involves discussing their expectations and outlining what's expected from both parties, like boundaries, limitations to confidentiality, etc. This helps prevent any misunderstandings and allows clients to make an informed decision about working with a specific therapist. Clear communication in a contract shows respect and a commitment to working together in an agreed-upon manner.
