THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE THERAPY

Does your therapist offer a free introductory session?

Many therapists offer a free, introductory meeting (in-person or remote). This offers a chance for you to share what has brought you to therapy, talk about your goals, and ask the therapist questions.

Which questions to ask your therapist before your first full session?

What is their approach to therapy? Does it align with what you are seeking? For example, some counsellors may be strictly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy practitioners which includes sometimes giving the client ‘homework’ to do outside of therapy. This may or may not be what you want.

How often have you worked with clients facing circumstances similar to mine? This will give you an idea of how well-equipped the therapist is to help you with your specific concerns.

Are they inclusive?

How much do they charge? Do they offer a sliding scale?

What are their qualifications? Are they affiliated with any professional body?

BACP Membership in the UK and implications for you.

If your therapist is a member of The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), it means that they have received adequate training required by the governing authority and are adhering to a rigorous standard of professionalism, proficiency, and ethical standards. For you, this ensures that you get the best care possible.
